CAEP support

Malawi’s NDC expanded its qualitative targets and measures, which complement the enhanced emissions reduction targets.

CAEP provided analytical support for quantifying the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction potential through 2040 against a business as usual (BAU) baseline. The process involved extensive consultation with sector experts and government departments across energy, industry, waste, agriculture, and forestry.
CAEP supported Malawi in setting its mitigation targets to accelerate its energy transition. The support involved an analysis of policy solutions and practical pathways for the procurement of solar and grid-scale battery storage projects in Malawi.

The quality of Malawi’s NDC has been enhanced through better data management processes, costing of Malawi’s targets and developing its MRV system.

CAEP supported the National Statistics Office of Malawi (NSO) in designing census questions and data security measures in place to ensure that the data collection process is transparent and robust. This was trialed across the AFOLU, IPPU and energy sectors.
Additionally, the program facilitated technical assistance to analyze the cost-benefit ratio for each mitigation activity. Additional support included in-country training of five national experts around mitigation analysis and cost-benefit tools.
Finally, CAEP supported the delivery of a framework of indicators as a basis for developing an MRV system.

CAEP support

Malawi’s NDC followed the ICTU communication standards, ensuring transparency both across stakeholders and in reporting to the UNFCCC.

CAEP supported awareness raising among participants around climate transparency issues, especially regarding data collection and institutional arrangements. It organized a three-day workshop to establish trust and communication channels between the organizations as well as institutional relationship through Memoranda of Understanding.
