CAEP support

Costa Rica’s NDC enhanced its mitigation and adaptation ambition, setting targets based on new scenarios and expanding its sectoral coverage. CAEP supported this through:

Analytical support assessing climate risk and designing plausible qualitative scenarios for specific adaptation actions, including through Nature-based Solutions (NbS).
Technical assistance for developing actionable sectoral plans, identifying co-benefits between mitigation, adaptation and other topics such as biodiversity conservation.

Costa Rica’s NDC outlined an enhanced measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) and monitoring and evaluation (M&E) systems.

CAEP provided analytical support for defining indicators, developing data-sharing and confidentiality agreements and designing dashboards and visualizations for the adaptation, resilience and nature-based solutions component of Costa Rica’s updated NDC.

The NDC update process included a strategic communication campaign, a media engagement program and the use of art as a vehicle for citizen’s participation and engagement.

CAEP supported the design and implementation of a strategic communication campaign to raise awareness among key stakeholders (citizens, youth, and businesspeople) of the importance of Costa Rica's NDC, its main components and its in-country implementation. The campaign developed new narratives on the relationship between the fight against climate change and improving public health, transport, and economic development.
With CAEP support, a group of journalists was selected to follow the climate change agenda in Costa Rica. This included getting them acquainted with key concepts to follow the NDC update process, and to cover Costa Rica’s preparation and engagement in COP26.
CAEP supported activities using art as a medium to discuss climate change adaptation and environmental sustainability to open up dialogues between government officials, the art community, and citizens.
